Some individuals argue that schools should teach children practical skills such as designing and creating objects, while others believe that academic subjects deserve greater priority. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why a balanced approach that includes practical learning is more beneficial for students.
On the one hand, learning to design and create things at school offers numerous practical advantages. Such activities encourage creativity, innovation, and problem-solving abilities, which are essential skills in the modern world. When children participate in hands-on projects such as building models, crafting objects, or designing simple products, they gain practical knowledge and technical competence. Furthermore, these activities can significantly enhance students’ critical thinking and analytical skills, as they are required to plan, experiment, and improve their designs. As a result, practical subjects help students develop a deeper understanding of real-life applications rather than relying solely on theoretical knowledge.
On the other hand, many people believe that schools should primarily focus on traditional academic subjects such as mathematics, science, and languages. These subjects form the foundation of intellectual development and are often considered crucial for higher education and professional careers. Critics argue that allocating too much time to practical design activities could divert attention from core academic disciplines, which are essential for students’ long-term success. Additionally, in many competitive education systems, strong academic performance is regarded as a key determinant of career opportunities, making it understandable why some people prioritize theoretical learning.
In conclusion, although academic subjects play a vital role in shaping students’ future careers, teaching children to design and make things can also provide valuable practical skills and foster creativity. In my opinion, schools should integrate both approaches, as combining theoretical knowledge with practical learning can produce well-rounded individuals who are better prepared for the challenges of modern society.
