In the past, children often played outdoor games with their friends. Nowadays, children often connect with their friends online instead. Is this a positive or a negative development?

In earlier times, children commonly spent their free time playing outdoor games with their peers, whereas modern children increasingly socialize through online platforms and digital games. This change has been driven by technological advancement and changing lifestyles. In my opinion, although online interaction offers certain benefits, it is largely a negative development because it reduces physical activity and weakens real-life social skills.

One of the main disadvantages of this trend is the decline in physical exercise among children. Outdoor activities such as football, cycling, and hide-and-seek help youngsters remain active, healthy, and energetic. By contrast, spending long hours in front of screens can lead to sedentary habits, obesity, and other health-related problems. Furthermore, excessive screen time may negatively affect eyesight and sleeping patterns, which are essential for a child’s healthy growth and development.

Another drawback is that online communication cannot fully replace face-to-face interaction. When children play together outdoors, they learn valuable social skills such as teamwork, cooperation, conflict resolution, and empathy. However, virtual communication is often less meaningful and may encourage isolation or overdependence on technology. Admittedly, online platforms can help children stay in touch with friends who live far away and provide entertainment. Nevertheless, these benefits are limited compared to the developmental advantages of outdoor play.

To conclude, although connecting with friends online offers convenience and entertainment, I believe it is a negative development overall. This is because it discourages physical activity and limits the development of essential interpersonal skills that children gain through outdoor games.
