GENERAL IELTS WRITING TASK 2 – Question

Many young people are doing the same type of job as their parents.
Why is this the case?
Are there more advantages or disadvantages to this trend?

Sample Answer

In many societies, it is increasingly common for young people to follow the same career path as their parents. This trend can be attributed to family influence and practical considerations, and in my opinion, although there are some benefits, the disadvantages are more significant.

One major reason for this trend is parental influence. Children grow up observing their parents’ professions, which naturally shapes their interests and career choices. In addition, parents often encourage their children to enter the same field because they can offer guidance, training, and professional connections. Another important factor is job security. Certain family professions, such as farming, business, or skilled trades, provide a stable income and reduce the risks associated with starting a new career.

There are some advantages to this trend. Young people can benefit from hands-on experience, insider knowledge, and established networks, which can lead to early career success. However, the disadvantages tend to outweigh the benefits. Following a family profession may limit personal growth and prevent individuals from exploring their true interests and talents. Over time, this lack of career satisfaction can lead to frustration and reduced motivation at work.

In conclusion, young people often choose the same jobs as their parents due to family influence and financial security. While this can offer short-term advantages, I believe the long-term disadvantages, such as restricted career choices and reduced personal fulfilment, make this trend more harmful than beneficial.
