IELTS Writing Task 2 – Question

In some societies, sports and entertainment figures are more valued than professionals such as doctors and teachers.
Why is this the case, and do you consider it a positive or negative trend?

Sample Answer

In many modern societies, celebrities from sports and entertainment often receive greater recognition and financial rewards than essential professionals like doctors and teachers. This situation has developed due to media influence and commercial interests, and in my opinion, it represents a largely negative trend.

One key reason for this phenomenon is the power of mass media and social platforms. Sports stars and entertainers are constantly in the public eye, and their achievements are widely broadcast, making them household names. In contrast, the contributions of doctors and teachers, although vital, are less visible and often go unnoticed. Additionally, the entertainment industry generates enormous revenue, which results in higher salaries and public admiration for celebrities. This commercial success directly affects how society measures value and success.

I believe this trend is negative because it undermines the importance of professions that form the backbone of society. Doctors save lives and maintain public health, while teachers shape future generations. When these professions are undervalued, it can discourage talented individuals from entering these fields, potentially leading to long-term social consequences such as poor healthcare systems and declining educational standards.

In conclusion, sports and entertainment figures are more highly valued due to media exposure and financial profitability. However, this imbalance is harmful, as it diminishes respect for essential professionals. Society should place greater emphasis on recognising and rewarding the contributions of doctors and teachers, as their roles are fundamental to long-term social development.
