It is often argued that children should follow their parents’ advice, while others believe that young people should make their own decisions. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own opinion.
On the one hand, many people believe that parents’ advice is invaluable because it is based on life experience and long-term observation. Parents usually have a deep understanding of their children’s strengths and weaknesses, which allows them to offer practical guidance in important areas such as education, career choices, and personal behaviour. Moreover, following parental advice can help children avoid common mistakes and make well-informed decisions, particularly during their formative years when judgment may still be underdeveloped.
On the other hand, opponents argue that children should not always rely on their parents’ opinions and should instead learn to think independently. Making personal choices enables young people to develop self-confidence, decision-making skills, and a sense of responsibility. If children constantly depend on parental guidance, they may struggle to cope with real-life challenges in the future. In addition, parents may sometimes have outdated views that do not fully reflect modern social and professional realities.
In my opinion, while parental advice should be respected and carefully considered, it should not be followed blindly. Children benefit most when they strike a balance between listening to their parents and gaining independence through personal experience. This approach allows them to grow into confident individuals who can make responsible decisions while still valuing family guidance.
