There is an ongoing debate about whether schools should reward students primarily for academic excellence or place greater emphasis on recognising achievements in areas such as sports, music, and behaviour. While academic success is undeniably important, I believe that schools should acknowledge a wider range of accomplishments in order to encourage holistic student development.

On the one hand, awarding prizes for academic performance can motivate students to excel in their studies. Academic rewards reinforce the value of discipline, perseverance, and intellectual effort, which are essential for future educational and career success. Furthermore, recognising scholastic achievement helps maintain high academic standards and encourages healthy competition among students. In highly competitive education systems, such incentives can push learners to maximise their potential and develop strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

On the other hand, focusing exclusively on academic success may overlook students who excel in non-academic fields. Many learners possess talents in sports, music, leadership, or positive behaviour, which are equally valuable for personal growth and social development. Rewarding these achievements promotes inclusivity and boosts students’ self-esteem, particularly for those who may struggle academically. Moreover, recognising good behaviour and teamwork fosters a positive school culture and encourages qualities such as cooperation, responsibility, and resilience.

In conclusion, although academic prizes play a vital role in encouraging educational excellence, schools should also reward achievements in other areas. A balanced reward system not only motivates a broader range of students but also supports well-rounded development, which is essential for success beyond the classroom.
